Paranormal Romance

Vampire State of Mind by Jane Lovering

Blurb: Jessica Grant knows vampires only too well as she runs the York Council tracker programme. To Jess, vampires are arrogant and far too sexy for their own good, particularly her ex-colleague Sil. But when a demon turns up and threatens the whole world order, the stakes are high.

They are also very, very pointy and Jess isn’t afraid to use them, even on the vampire that she’s afraid she’s falling in love with….

Review: Having bought – and loved – Jane’s contemporary romances before, the second that I saw her new urban fantasy/paranormal romance, I had to get it. And I loved every second.
It’s unusual to have a PNR set in the UK and then it tends to be London, so having one set further north definitely appealed. As did the humour.
Jessie is a very relatable heroine, working as a glorified admin assistant in an overlooked department dealing with “Otherworlders” aka the vampires, werewolves, and things that go bump in the night that seeped into the normal world after a “magnetic shift” (which isn’t really explained, but it doesn’t matter.) On a supposedly routine tag-and-bag, she’s given a nebulous warning by a demon who owes her a favour.
In short succession, one of the Enforcement teams is glamoured, a vampire is murdered, and Jessie finds herself entered into the Otherworlder games that no human has run before. she finds herself caught between Sil – the vampire she’s loved for far too long – and an Otherworlder whose species Jessie can’t figure out.
Vampire State of Mind moves nice and quickly. Questions are answered, but often with more raised, and it’s a really intriguing story. Add in some mild spice and you have a delicious book that you zip through in no time… and then go and buy the next in the series because you want more and Jessie and Sil!
